Thin sheets geometry and mechanics

Thin sheets produces surprising shapes when submitted to simple loadings due to the interplay of mechanics and geometry: mechanically, they are difficult to stretch but easy to bend while geometrically, Gauss theorem implies that bending in two directions requires stretching. In the case of very thin sheets (around 100 nm) placed on a liquid interface, we have shown that a simple geometric model was able to predict the final shape. In the case of a stretched and twisted ribbon, we have explained several of the morphologies that appear on the rich phase diagram.
